Novel Proteins for Pets: What They Are & Why They're Changing Pet Nutrition

by Daniel Woo 20 Jul 2025 0 comments

These days, pet parents are doing more than just picking up kibble off the shelf—they’re reading labels, asking questions, and exploring fresh ways to nourish their pets. One rising trend? Proteins you don’t see every day. We’re talking kangaroo, turtle, horse meat, and even black soldier fly larvae.

Sound unusual? Maybe. But for pets with food sensitivities or owners looking to try something beyond the usual chicken or beef, these lesser-known options are becoming real contenders. So, what makes them so special—and are they actually better? Let’s unpack it.

1)      What Are Novel Proteins?

“Novel proteins” simply refer to protein sources that your pet hasn’t commonly been exposed to. For most pets, that means anything beyond the usual chicken, beef, lamb, or fish. Examples of novel proteins: Kangaroo – Lean, wild-sourced meat with low fat and high iron. Horse – Highly digestible and rich in amino acids. Turtle – A unique source of calcium and omega-3s. Black Soldier Fly Larvae (BSFL) – Sustainable, protein-packed, and full of lauric acid. These proteins aren’t just exotic—they serve a purpose, especially for pets with allergies, sensitivities, or digestive issues.

3)      Benefits of Feeding Novel Proteins

·         Allergy Relief

Many pets develop intolerances to chicken or beef after repeated exposure. Novel proteins offer a clean slate for the immune system.

·         Improved Digestive Health

Because novel proteins are often easier to digest, they can help reduce bloating, soft stools, or upset stomachs.

·         Better Coat & Skin

Unique amino acid profiles and healthier fats (like omega-3s and lauric acid) support skin hydration and a shinier coat.

·         Weight Management

Kangaroo and soldier fly proteins are leaner alternatives, which can help manage your pet’s weight without sacrificing protein.

·         Sustainability

Black soldier fly farming uses less land, water, and produces fewer emissions—meaning it’s good for your pet and the planet.

Of course, every silver lining has its cloud. Here are a few things to keep in mind:

  • Less readily available
  • More Expensive
  • Might require gradual introduction to your pet's diet
  • Risk of palatability (some pets may be picky)
  • Regulatory concerns or sourcing transparency

My Personal Experience As a pet parent who's experimented with these proteins, I can tell you it's been a journey. My Japanese Spitz, Rainbow, who used to struggle with chicken-based foods, absolutely thrives on a kangaroo protein diet. Her coat is shinier, she's more energetic, and those pesky skin allergies? Dramatically reduced.

4)      Quick Recommendations

·         For dogs with sensitive stomachs: Try kangaroo, horse or turtle

·         For cats with skin issues: Explore turtle or novel fish proteins

·         For the environmentally conscious: Consider soldier fly protein
